Plan to make these children celebrate the festival of lights

Elocution, debate, drawing, essay and song competitions will be conducted to tap the innate talent of these poor souls in Kanyakumari district this year

Children of orphans and semi-orphans at Naduvoorkarai, a tiny village near Mondaicadu in Kanyakumari district, are a happy lot as they are going to celebrate Deepavali in a grand manner since a non-governmental organisation has decided to light a lamp in their lives.

There are 30 children, studying in and around Naduvoorkarai, who were wards of addicts. Athencottasan Muthamizh Kazhagam, the non-governmental organisation, has decided to conduct various competitions including elocution, debate, drawing, essay, songs etc to tap the innate talent of these children. The establishment of a de-addiction centre at Naduvoorkarai and Nagercoil by the NGO with assistance from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has come as boon to addicts and to those who depend on them.

The addicts are hopeful of leading a bright and prosperous life after getting treatment, free of cost, at this centre. Treatment would make the alcoholic stop consuming liquor without experiencing severe withdrawal problems. Drinking even a small quantity of alcohol after years of abstinence would make an addict back to obsessive drinking. Alcoholism is a permanent condition. Only complete abstinence would arrest the disease, Mr. Arul Kannan, Director, AMK, said.

Voluntary organisations are being assisted by the Government to undertake educative work in various communities and target groups.

The experience gained by these organisations in care, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts, along with select case studies, is being widely shared with enlightened groups to invigorate their role in educating the public and preventing drug abuse.

A network of voluntary agencies has been set up in Kanyakumari district to ensure a drug free life in society.

The basic objective is to ensure that support of the family and the community is mobilised to the maximum level. The methodology aims at strengthening the family as a unit and generating cooperation through social workers for motivating addicts to accept detoxification and maintain a drug free life, said Suseela, a counsellor of the AMK.
