This Day That Age
India moved on November 4 to reconcile conflicting views on disarmament as the U.N. Political Committee entered the fourth week of its crucial debate. The Indian delegation circulated a draft resolution which would have the Disarmament Commission’s five-member sub-committee consider all the proposals made in the committee and report back to the commission by April 1 next. With the views of 81 other member nations to be considered it was not clear how the reaction to the Indian move was split. It was understood that the amount of support for the document would decide whether it would be formally tabled. The Indian idea was to avoid protracted procedural debate and clear the way for the sub-committee to get down to business.
