ARIYALUR: Representatives of merchants, service organisations and political parties have expressed their jubilation over Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s recent announcement for the formation of a new district with Ariyalur as headquarters.
They have urged the Chief Minister to initiate immediate action for preliminary works connected with the carving out the new district from the composite Perambalur district.
Ariyalur District Retrieval Committee co-ordinator S. Balakrishnan said that villagers of Ariyalur and surrounding areas such as Jayamkondam, Andimadam and Meensuritti had to travel a long distance to reach the Collecotorate for redressal of their grievances.
The creation of the new district would take the government machinery to the doorsteps of the economically poor. Further, it would also contribute to the industrial growth of the district, he added. East Ariyalur district secretary of Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam R. Jayavel said that although an earlier announcement on the restoration of the district status for Ariyalur brought some solace, the proposal was yet to see the light of the day for some time.
The proposal for bifurcation had witnessed political mockery due to difference of opinion between All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
