PUDUKOTTAI: Retired employee of Cooperative Spinning Mills S. Ramabhadran, who had a nagging pain in his right hand a year ago, now feels the healing effect of ‘yoga.’
G. Prabakaran, a student, makes it a point to play football or volleyball for two hours in the morning before leaving for the Government Polytechnic in Aranthangi. He returns in the evening to practise.
The sprawling five-acre site of the Armed Reserve ground which, till a year ago, wore an ugly look and remained unsafe with thick bushes and thorny plants, has now become a mini-stadium.
Scores of students, youths and elders undergo coaching in various games of their interest, thanks to the efforts of Superintendent of Police Kapil Kumar C. Saratkar.
The ground is brimming with sports activities, more particularly in the evening when even women undergo rigorous practice even as elderly persons walk on the adjacent track.
The bushes have been replaced by neatly-laid courts for tennis, ball badminton, volleyball, cricket, karate and ‘kabbadi.’
The provision of infrastructure and sports materials has been attracting a number of people of various age groups to make the most of the facility.
The training is offered by police personnel and other coaches and office-bearers of a few sports associations. Apart from the benefits of games, the sports activities on the police ground have helped build a rapport between the police and members of the public within a short span of time, says Mr. Saratkar.
