Tuticorin: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has appealed to the public to refrain from bursting crackers, which produce noise of high decibels and cause pollution during Deepavali.
S. Shanmugasundaram, District Environmental Engineer, TNPCB, told The Hindu that sale of crackers, which produced 125 decibels at a distance of four metres when they went off, was banned.
“Severe action would be taken against those who were found selling such crackers under the Environment Protection Act,” he said.
According to him, revellers should not use crackers manufactured using high quantity of iron powder, barium nitrate, aluminum powder, sodium nitrate, strontium nitrate and potassium chlorate.
“Bursting of crackers with these contents would pollute the atmosphere since they would emit high-levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) into the atmosphere, which was harmful to the human beings, when inhaled.”
As regards the ‘Dos’ and ‘Don’ts’, he said that the public should wear tight cotton clothes while bursting crackers.
They should keep adequate quantity of water beside them to meet emergencies, if any. Eyes should be washed, if any SPM went into it and burns should be washed with cold water.
The public should not use match sticks to light crackers. Bursting of crackers on narrow lanes and at places where a group of high rise buildings were situated should be avoided. Rockets should not be used since they were dangerous, he said.
