Cauvery Sevai Maiyam distributes clothes to 130 visually challenged

NEW PINCH: Children and visually-disabled persons who got garments for Deepavali.
TIRUCHI: Cauvery Sevai Maiyam, Kattur, celebrated its eleventh year by distributing new clothes worth over Rs. 30,000 to 130 visually challenged people residing in Gandhinagar near Nagamangalam and their school going children to enable them to celebrate the forthcoming Deepavali on a happy note.
The members of Maiyam collected donations from residents of Kattur, Vignesh Nagar and Cauvery Nagar for the event.
“Our Maiyam is running a cable network and we sought the assistance of people for this project. Contributions poured in within no time and we are thankful to all those who generously donated for this project,” Maiyam founder U. S. R. Selvaraj said with satisfaction writ on his face.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) general manager S. Karunakaran inaugurated the eleventh year celebrations of Maiyam by lighting the traditional lamp and Deputy General Manager M. Balasubramanian gave away the clothes .
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Selvaraj explained the recent activities undertaken by the Maiyam, comprising the staff of BHEL as members.
He said the Maiyam distributed clothes to 86 tsunami hit school children lodged in the Annai Sathya Government Home functioning in Nagapattinam town in January and 48 bags of rice to Chennai-based Uthavum Karangal.
Ellakkudi Village Panchayat president M. Tamilselvam, Lions Club of Tiruverumbur president M. Balasubramanian, Maiyam co-ordinator C. Alagarsamy and others spoke.
