Area of neglect

Sundar Nagar, supposed to be a decent residential area with wide roads, now looks like an area of neglect, with garbage not cleared for weeks together and drains not cleaned regularly, III Cross in particular.

To top it, the vehicles parked by a Government office in the vicinity, for months together is adding to the woes of the residents.

Will authorities take immediate action to set things right in the earnest of children, women and people using this road?

Kalaimathy Thenappan,

Sundar Nagar.

Issue small currency notes

When we go to post office to draw money from the senior citizen savings scheme etc, we are paid in higher denomination currency notes like Rs. 500 or Rs. 1,000. We are not able to exchange these notes in the banks as our operations are mostly restricted to post offices. Even the ATMs spews out only Rs.500 notes. Senior citizens need only smaller denomination currency.

I request the postal authorities to issue smaller currency notes.

S. Sivaraman,

Srirangam.

Problems aplenty on bypass road

Since last Wednesday, the Tiruchi-Chennai bypass road has been trembling under unbearable traffic flow, as Thiruvanaikoil is closed for underground drainage excavation work.

This has inconvenienced the daily commuters and travellers between Tiruchi and Chennai beyond description.

The difficulty is more pronounced as the four laning in the bypass road is also in progress. Already there is a lot of unprecedented jostling in the wake of Diwali and added to it the monsoon is in full swing. Power cuts during night may prove fatal to passers by. Seasonal rain should have been on the agenda before plunging into action.

This shows that the Corporation lacks planning and foresight.

This has turned a commendable work into one of the acute criticism. If the corporation fails to take adequate care in levelling the roads properly, the misery will continue unabated till rain stops.

Ahalya Padmanabhan,

T.V. Koil.

II

Without re-laying the stretch between Ammamandapam Road and Rajagopuram the traffic has been diverted via Srirangam, as they have started the drainage work at T.V.Koil side.

Because of this, people living in the stretch between T.V.Koil, Check Post were the worst-hit.

At least they should have started the work after Deepavali. After finishing the works, the roads have to be re-laid properly with immediate effect.

G. Srikanth,

Cameras at bus stops

This has reference to the report about buses stopping near traffic signals (The Hindu dated November 1, 2007).

Surveillance cameras can be fixed in such bus stops to avoid such violation.

The crew must be strictly instructed to halt near bus shelters.

Another reason for passenger standing away from the bus shelter is that, in some places the visibility of the approaching buses are blocked by encroachments. Transport authorities can also consider writing the destination boards in big fonts.

P.K. Raman,

Ayyappa Nagar.

Flats in Srirangam

After the advent of 3500 odd apartments in Srirangam in the last 20 years, the ecological damage in the form of coconut groves being pulled down, single dwelling units pulled down and in its place 16 or 24 apartments built to cater to the needs of people wishing to over populate the eco-fragile Srirangam island, Mr. A. Sampath’s argument that Rs.6000 should be collected by TMC from each apartment complex does not hold water even for a wink.

Instead, each dwelling unit should be changed in apartment complex Rs.6000 plus an environmental damage charge of Rs.4000. Let not the Corporation authorities give into such unjustifiable demand from people who made Srirangam overcrowded.

T. M. Renganathan,

Srirangam.

Repair clock on tower

At Gandhi Market, there is an old tower which might be 100 years old with clocks on 4 sides.

The clock has stopped working long back. Years back a clock dealer set it right, but later it stopped.

As a token of public service and for their own publicity will any one of the clock dealers come forward to repair and set the clock right or install a new digital clock.

V. Santhanagopalan,

North Andar Street.

Unjustifiable demand

Asking the commercial establishments (viz. marriage halls, get together halls etc.) to deposit, double the amount of drainage deposit of Rs.6000. And demanding Rs.6000 from each flat owner of residential apartment for underground drainage scheme is unjustifiable, as most of the flats have started/completed before the said scheme started.

It is therefore requested Corporation authorities of Tiruchi/Srirangam to examine the issue and revise to collect Rs.6000 per residential apartment.

S. Srinivasan,

Srirangam.

IOC directive

The direction of Madurai Area Office of the Indian Oil Corporation, which includes Tiruchi, to stop supply of gas, causing hardship to citizens, to family cards bearing the same door numbers until the cards get endorsed individual separate door numbers, is irrational and unconstitutional. Because more than one family has to live sharing accommodation in a single house due to paucity of accommodation or finance, which is authorised by the provisions of Art.19 [1] [e] of the Constitution of India to compel the IOC to have a different approach in this matter.

G.P. Shree,

T.V. Koil.

Precautions for Navarthri also

The police department gives various safety precautions to the public during Deepavali. But during the recent Navarathri days the city roads were found with waste flowers used for pooja and pumpkins broken on the middle of the roads including the main roads.

This was causing much harassment to the vehicle users. The police department should take necessary steps during such times to avoid breaking the pumpkins like this which causes harassment to the vehicle users.

G. Rajesh Gopal,

OFT Estate.

Bus shelter needed

Tiruchi Junction is renovated and being beautified.

Crores of rupees is spent for this.

At the same time, a good bus shelter is also required out of the junction, opposite the Murugan temple.

As seen in some of the city areas, bus shelter with seating and lighting arrangements is needed.

Will the Railway authorities coordinate with the Corporation authorities and do the needful?

S. Rajagopal,

OFT Estate.
