Industrial policy “path-breaking”

Special Correspondent

“It will help to attract more investments, thus taking the State

to greater heights”

CHENNAI: Leading chambers in the city have hailed the “New Industrial Policy 2007” as path-breaking, saying it will help to attract more investments, thus taking the State to greater heights.

Federation of Indian Export Organisations vice-president and regional chairman A. Sakthivel said the policy provided a comprehensive strength to all sectors to enhance production and create more jobs. It would help in the growth of the State’s gross domestic product to a sizeable extent.

Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry president M. Balasubramanian said the special thrust on export promotion would help the State’s exports to grow rapidly and create more jobs. The policy would also lead to overall industrial development. Special incentives for industrial parks would encourage setting up of more industrial units.

Confederation of Indian Industry Tamil Nadu State Council vice-chairman Manikam Ramaswami welcomed the introduction of e-filing system to get permission from the pollution control board for setting up of industries with different time limits for different categories. This would speed up clearance. “Besides, the introduction of Corporate Social Responsibility clause is thoughtful. When the industries are getting so many concessions from the State Government, it is time they took care of the neighbouring societies.”

Designation of the Commissioner of Industries as Export Commissioner, strengthening of the District Industries Centre in association with the FIEO, setting up of a comprehensive trade information portal and expeditious clearance of projects would go a long way in export promotion, said Mr. Sakthivel.

Marine discharge scheme hailed

He welcomed the marine discharge scheme for Tirupur and other industrial clusters and said the emphasis on development of human resource would create a large pool of skilled workforce.

Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry State Council chairman M. Rafeeque Ahmed said the policy would make the State vibrant and the most-attractive investment destination.

Thanking the Chief Minister for accepting the federation’s suggestions on agri-business, food processing and infrastructure sectors, he said these sectors would get a fillip.

However, the CII felt that the Government had failed to address two important issues: there was no mention of power sector reforms and no notification of sites for dumping of hazardous chemicals.

Chemical Industries Association president P.K.N. Panicker thanked the Government for having made a positive statement on the restriction on the use of methanol as a feed stock in chemical industries.
