SHARING A POINT: Prof Giancarlo Falcinelli of Italy with S. S. Badrinath, chairman, Sankara Nethralaya, at the dedication of the Dr.G. Sitalakshmi Memorial Clinic for Ocular Surface Disorders, in Chennai on Monday.

CHENNAI: It is difficult to see through a film of tears, but everyone who had tears in their eyes, at the Sankara Nethralaya auditorium on Monday evening, had the clearest vision for the future.

A vision defined by their dear, departed colleague G. Sitalakshmi and reinforced by her teacher, Giancarlo Falcinelli, the Italian ophthalmologist credited with developing the modified osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis procedure to restore vision. The octogenarian Prof. Falcinelli choked, as he described G. Sitalakshmi as “an exceptional person, stupendous surgeon and exceptional teacher.” The family, friends, colleagues and students of Sitalakshmi too had tears in their eyes as his words brought back memories of their having worked with her.

It was a fitting tribute Sankara Nethralaya paid by dedicating the Ocular Surface Superspeciality Clinic to her memory. Prof. Falcinelli unveiled a plaque that concretised this tribute with the words of the renamed centre: Dr. G. Sitalakshmi Memorial Clinic for Ocular Surface Disorders.

Prof. Falcinelli said it was now the duty of the living to carry on the work Sitalakshmi had done so well. Anand Suryavanshi, a patient whose vision was restored after Sitalakshmi performed the procedure on him, paid floral tributes to his benefactor.

S.S. Badrinath, chairman emeritus, Sankara Nethralaya, said Sitalakshmi had left an indelible mark on her colleagues, students and patients. The Ocular Surface Disorders clinic would provide a range of services under one roof. Dr. Geetha Iyer of Sankara Nethralaya provided details of the clinic and the procedure, under which a patient’s own tooth is used as a carrier for the plastic lens, thus reducing the chances of rejection.

Tarun Sharma, director, Sri Baghwan Mahavir Vitreo-Retinal Services, and V. Vaidyanathan of Vision Research Foundation honoured Prof. Falcinelli.

S. Vijay and Bhaskar Srinivasan of Sankara Nethrayala spoke.
