Over Rs.36 lakh to be given to victims, kin of victims
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has allocated over Rs.36 lakh to victims/kin of victims of the Vachathi violence, the Madras High Court was informed on Monday.
When a Division Bench, comprising Justice P.K. Misra and Justice S. Tamilvanan, took up a writ petition seeking compensation for the victims of the violence, the Secretary to the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department, Collector and Superintendent of Police of Dharmapuri district were present in the court as directed by the Bench.
Government Advocate N. Senthilkumar submitted that a Government Order was passed on November 3, allocating more than Rs.36 lakh and identifying 349 persons entitled to statutory compensation.
List pruned
Referring to a list of 475 persons submitted by R. Vaigai, counsel for the petitioner, he said double entries and names of persons who had married and come to the village after the incident had been excluded.
Verification on
Process was on to verify the details of the kin of victims, who had passed away during the pendency of the case.
The case relates to the attack on the tribal hamlet, Vachathi, by Forest, Police and Revenue Department personnel in June 1992.
The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation in February 1995. The charge sheet was filed in April 1996 and the trial transferred to Krishnagiri in October 1996.
