RK Math president cremated

KOLKATA: Swami Gahanananda, president of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, was cremated on the banks of the Hooghly in the Belur Math compound on Monday afternoon.

Thousands of devotees were present as the last rites were performed. Some witnessed the cremation from boats.

Swami Gahanananda (91), who was president of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission since May 2005, passed away in hospital on Sunday.

The gates to the bhavan where the body of the departed Swami was laid were opened for devotees to pay their last respects.

Ferry services across the river to the Math were made available by the local authorities considering the steady stream of people.
