PUDUCHERRY: In the last five years during the Deepavali season alone the Fire Services Department received 44 calls to extinguish fire, and goods worth Rs. 3,80,600 were gutted in fire accidents, a release issued by the District Collector on Tuesday said. The release, which lists safety measures to be followed by the public and by firecrackers sellers, has urged the public to celebrate the festival in a safe manner and take precautions while selling and bursting crackers. It also reminds people about the ban on bursting crackers between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the ban on the bursting of crackers within 100 metres of hospitals, places of worship, educational institutions and court buildings. The Collector, in a meeting of officials, had asked them to ensure the implementation of the Supreme Court and High Court orders and Environment Protection Act provisions. Pamphlets on safety procedures were distributed to schoolchildren through the Directorate of School Education, the release added.
