Panchayat Raj staff on the warpath

Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: The Andhra Pradesh State Panchayat Raj Chamber has threatened to intensify its agitation if Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy does not concede its demands by November 14.

Chamber chairman M. Appala Naidu told a press conference on Tuesday that Dr. Reddy, during his marathon padayatra in 2003, promised to transfer all the 29 subjects as stated in the 73rd and 74th Constitution (amendment) to local bodies but failed to implement it even after coming to power over three years ago. At the same time, he was gradually withdrawing all the powers bestowed on them in the past, Mr. Naidu said.

Again, in April last year, he promised to transfer at least 10 subjects within one month but did not adhere to it, he said, and added that that the Chamber would stage protest demonstrations at all mandal offices on December 20 and at Collectorates on January 1, relay fasts on January 12 and indefinite fast from January 26.
