Govt. asked to order immediate disbursement of dues to farmers

Krishnagiri: The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam (TNVS) has urged the State Government to order the immediate disbursement of Rs.300 crore to farmers who supplied sugarcane to private and cooperative mills in the State.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, the general secretary of TNVS, K. Balakrishnan, said farmers were in dire straits as they were not able to repay bank loans.
They were not able to take up further cultivation.
Many farmers were forced to sell their produce at Rs.300 to Rs.400 a tonne. Cooperative and private sugar mills should procure cane only from registered growers as per the agreement. As per the Sugarcane Control Act, 1996 the procurement money must be given within 15 days of cutting the cane otherwise the Government must pay the dues with an interest of 15 per cent, he said.
The sago serve in Salem district should not reject sago from farmers based on quality analysis. The Government should initiate steps to procure the sago directly from farmers. The Government should fix a price for sago as in the case of sugarcane and rice.It should issue pattas for poromboke lands, which were cultivated by Adi-dravidars for successive generations
