BANGALORE: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) staff have arrested Amith Kumar alias Mukesh (27) of Patna in Bihar who had allegedly cheated an MBBS seat aspirant of Rs. 10.75 lakh by promising her a seat in the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here. The police said Amith Kumar and his absconding accomplice Ananth Singh had advertised in two English leading newspapers that they would get seats in medical and engineering colleges in Karnataka. Subsequently, Swadeshi Roy of Nashik in Maharashtra approached Amith Kumar on his mobile phone seeking a MBBS seat for his sister. On September 4, 2007, the duo made Mr. Roy to come to a five-star hotel in High Grounds area and took Rs. 7.5 lakh cash and a cheque for Rs. 3.25 lakh from him. Fake admission lettersThey allegedly gave him fake admission letters that his sister had been allotted a MBBS seat in KIMS. After realising the fraud played on him and his sister, Mr. Roy lodged a complaint with the High Grounds police on September 15, the police said. On the basis of Amith Kumar’s mobile phone number, the CCB staff traced and arrested him in Patna and recovered from him Rs. 15,000 cash and three mobile phones. The police are on the lookout for the other accused, Ananth Singh alias Ravi.
