Protest against ‘police high-handedness’

Special Correspondent

UP IN ARMS: Members of the Khaja Bandanawaz General Hospital Karmika Sangha protesting against the alleged highhandedness of the police to break their strike.

GULBARGA: Members of the Khaja Bandanawaz General Hospital Karmika Sangha on Tuesday staged a protest in the city against what they called an attempt by the police to forcibly put an end to their strike.

The members, who are on strike demanding statutory minimum wages, came in a procession to the office of the Superintendent of Police and submitted a memorandum demanding action against two officials attached to the Station Bazaar police station for allegedly threatening them with dire consequences if they did not end their strike immediately.

In the memorandum, the employees stated that they were on strike for a genuine demand.

They pointed out that their strike was legal and a formal notice had been served to the management.

They had gone on strike as per the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act. The strike had not been declared illegal by anyone including the Labour Department.

The workers said that instead of resolving the dispute amicably, the management had resorted to offensive methods.

The memorandum pointed out that the striking employees had never prevented other employees, who did not join the strike, from discharging their duties.
