Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: A total of 37 resolutions were adopted at the Puducherry municipal council meeting held on Monday. Besides one urging the Assembly to take a decision to kill stray dogs, the resolutions include imposing an entry fee of Rs. 2 to the Bharathi Park and 15 new attractive garbage bins for Goubert Avenue. On the issue of street dogs, councillors, cutting across party lines, alleged that dog-catchers were not doing their work properly and that the canines were becoming a great menace. They said similar was the case with people spraying anti-mosquito insecticide. WithheldThe meeting decided to withhold three resolutions pertaining to providing medical reimbursement to municipal staff stating that councillors too must be provided with reimbursement. Chairperson B. Sridevi said there were no provisions for reimbursement for the councillors. However, steps would be taken to ensure reimbursement to councillors as well, she added. All the municipal wards would soon see 100 new concrete garbage bins replacing the damaged ones. When a councillor sought bigger bins, Commissioner N. Sumathi said conservancy staff were unable to move such bins. Name changeAlong with a resolution seeking to extend the term of French translators for transcribing old birth and death records, councillors sought that the municipality should also facilitate name change. At present, they only allow corrections in spellings of names. Another resolution relating to the presence of ward councillors at French Civil Code marriages being held at the municipality was adopted. WalkoutEarlier, members of the Congress and Puducherry Munnetra Congress staged a walkout, stressing demands including cancellation of a tender for 24-hour garbage clearance and more powers for the municipality.
