AGAINST RICE SMUGGLING: Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staging a demonstration in Puducherry on Tuesday. — PUDUCHERRY: Activists of the Puducherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a demonstration here on Tuesday asking the government to present a white paper on the steps taken against the gang involved in the “smuggling of rice” through the Puducherry Railway Station. The demonstration was also aimed at demanding the arrest of the government personnel who had “connived” with those involved in the attempt to smuggle rice from the Union Territory. The party also demanded stern action against those involved in the smuggling. Meanwhile, the district administration has started shifting the rice from the detained wagons to the Food Corporation of India’s godown in Uppalam. Around 30 trucks were used for transporting the stock to the godown, they said. The rice would be kept at the godown till the investigation was completed, official sources said.
