Broadband service in all Bijapur BSNL exchanges soon

Staff Correspondent

It is available only in four towns of the district

Bandwith increased from 256 kbps to

2 mbps

Installation work will be completed by March

BIJAPUR: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has plans to introduce broadband service in all its telephone exchanges under Bijapur Telecom District, covering the revenue districts of Bijapur and Bagalkot, by March next.

Broadband service is now available only in Bijapur, Bagalkot, Hungund, Ilkal and Jamkhandi towns.

In Bijapur city, BSNL will provide broadband connection on demand. While the installed capacity of broadband is 1,200 slots, 1,000 customers have availed of the service.

The waiting list in Bagalkot exchange will be cleared by BSNL by January.

Broadband width

The broadband bandwidth has been increased from 256 kbps to 2 mbps and the download limit has been doubled, according to M.B. Ravichandran, General Manager of the telecom district.

He told presspersons here that preparations were on to install broadband equipment in the remaining exchanges. The work would be completed by March, he said.

CDMA technology

Mr. Ravichandran said CDMA technology-based wireless in local loop (WLL) service was available in Bijapur, Indi, Sindagi, Mudhol, Devara Hipparagi, Bagalkot, Hungund, Babaleshwar, Muddebihal, Badami, Jamkhandi, Basavanabagewadi and Ballolli exchanges, and the service had been launched in Huvina Hipparagi, Guledgud, Hallur, Bilagi, Kalakeri, Rabkavi, Tamba, Telgi, Karadi, Dhulkhed, Mahalingpur, and Lokapur. Work was pending in Almel, Talikot and Tikota. Once it was cleared, the WLL service coverage would be 99 per cent.

Decline

Admitting that the demand for landline telephone was declining, Mr. Ravichandran said that the installed landline capacity in the telecom district was 1,22,544 and there were only 79,699 live connections.

However, cellphones had made good the loss.

There were 62,000 BSNL cellphone connections in the district, he added.

Deputy General Manager Shravankumar was present.
