Anantapur ZP chief asks them to create awareness among villagers

Healthy practices: District Collector N. Sridhar speaking at an awareness meeting on total sanitation in Anantapur on Tuesday.

ANANTAPUR: Sarpanches in the district should create social awareness on sanitation and make every village a total-sanitation village, Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha said here on Tuesday. Maintenance of sanitation was possible only with team work, she noted.

Speaking at an awareness meeting on ‘nirmal gram puraskar’ conducted by District Water and Sanitation Committee for sarpanches, MPTC and ZPTC members, mandal parishad president and mandal development officers, she said that uncleared garbage heaps for long periods, clogged drains and unhygienic conditions were spreading chikungunya, brain fever, malaria and other diseases. People, sarpanches, and departments like panchayati raj, rural water supply, medical and health and others should work united for better sanitation.

District Collector N. Sridhar asked the sarpanches to educate the people by leading the campaign without waiting for someone from outside to come and do it for them. Of the 113 villages recommended for the puraskar last year, the Centre had selected 17 villages.

He suggested the sarpanches to improve awareness on different government schemes and educate the people on eradication of child labour, achieving total literacy and total sanitation and play their role in building a better society. About 5.5 lakh individual sanitary latrines were constructed in the district so far and it was the responsibility of the village administration to see that the beneficiaries utilised the facility. Superintending Engineer of RWS A. Ramulu Naik, ZP CEO K. Sripathi Rao, Project Director of DWMA G. Gopal, DPO P. Nagaraju, DM&HO Balaramaiah, Project Director of ICDS K. Muthyalamma and others participated.
