BJP lodges complaint with police against Shivakumar

BJP wants Shivakumar arrested and action initiated

Police refer complaint to legal experts for opinion

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday lodged a complaint against Congress MLA D.K. Shivakumar with the High Grounds police in Bangalore for reportedly instigating Congress workers to tear the clothes off BJP leader and Bangalore South MP H.N. Ananth Kumar if he participates in any public function.

In its complaint, the BJP Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike unit, led by its president, B.N. Vijaykumar, demanded that Mr. Shivakumar be arrested and action be initiated against him for trying to instigate violence.

They alleged that Mr. Shivakumar, in his speech at Monday’s Congress rally in Bangalore, called upon Congress workers not to spare Mr. Ananth Kumar for describing Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as “fake Gandhis”.

The BJP delegation also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division).

‘File case’

In a press release, BJP State unit spokesman S. Suresh Kumar demanded that a criminal case be filed against Mr. Shivakumar.

“The Congress leaders have displayed their culture by making low-level comments against BJP leaders during their campaign on Monday. If this is the intention of their campaign, what will be the fate of the country,” he wondered.

Legal opinion

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Bipin Gopalakrishna said the complaint from the BJP delegation had been received, and it had been referred to legal experts to ascertain whether a case could be registered. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) B.N.S. Reddy said Mr. Vijaykumar had also petitioned him separately in this regard.

In a statement to the press, Mr. Shivakumar said, “I am ready to face the challenge provided Mr. Ananth Kumar files a complaint against me.”

He said that he objected to Mr. Ananth Kumar calling Ms. Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi “nakli” Gandhis.
