Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: Top naxal leader Anantha Sivasankar alias Jagan and his wife Sujatha surrendered before SP Sankabratha Bagchi at Nandyal in Kurnool district on Tuesday. Mr. Sankar, who carried a reward of Rs. 3 lakhs on his head, was the commander of state action team of CPI (Maoist).

Mr. Sankar who hailed from Yerramatham in Kothapalli mandal near Atmakur had a brief stint with CPI(ML) Janasakti before joining the CPI (Maoist) in 1999. He worked in Kurnool, Prakasam, Visakhapatnam and Orissa in several capacities and took part in many militant activities.

His last assignment was to draw a plan to assassinate former Director General of Police P. Ramulu and former naxal Nayeem. But the plan could not be implemented due to differences.

Mr. Sankar and his wife who remained inactive for a long time formally surrendered to the police. The SP said police would extend all cooperation and support to the extremists who wanted to surrender.
