Pulsating rounds mark quiz

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In which cartoon series do you encounter Officer Charlie Dibble? The question posed during the eighth edition of ‘The Hindu-Young World Quiz’ held here at the A.K.G. Memorial Hall on Tuesday arguably elicited the maximum number of guesses from the participants.

The question posed during the written preliminary round of the competition was thrown open to the audience after the completion of the round.

The audience comprising children from Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari, Kollam and Pathanamthitta tried their luck with answers ranging from Popey and Tom and Jerry to Mickey Mouse and Tintin.

Finally it was left to Sooraj Ayyappan, a student, of Trivandrum International School to come up with the correct answer ‘Top Cat’.

Over 500 participants from 100 schools attended the preliminary round, which began around 2 p.m. A total of 270 teams took part in the event. Each team consisted of two members.

The 25 questions for the preliminary session were flashed on an LCD screen kept inside the hall. The preliminary round covered a number of subjects including religion, literature, sports and science.

The preliminary round saw six teams qualifying for the finals.

The event consisted of a number of pulsating rounds with ‘Discovery,’ a round where contestants were asked to unearth the names of personalities and cities from intriguing one-liners, the most interesting of them all.

For instance, the participants were told to reveal the name of the South Indian award winning actress hiding behind the sentence ‘I am mere jeans.’

The answer was Meera Jasmin. Similarly the personality concealed behind the phrase ‘Thrilled Oaf’ was identified as Adolf Hitler.

The near-one-hour intense battle to decide the regional finalist however resulted in a dead-heat with the two teams from Loyola ending up in a tie.

Finally it was left to the quizmaster V.V. Ramanan to decide the winning team through ‘sudden death,’ which saw Noel Johns and Ambareesh S.J., class IX students of Loyola School, Sreekaryam, emerging as the winners.
