Dressed up: Schools too do not lag behind in celebrating the Festival of Lights.
Incessant drizzle and, sometimes, heavy rain that lashes the twin towns of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai for the past few days have not dampened the Deepavali spirit.
Crowds keep thronging every establishment – right from small shops selling traditional sweets and crackers to posh jewellery showrooms. Even as parents are busy with their eleventh-hour purchases, children, who really enjoy this occasion, are ma
king the streets bright with crackers and sparklers.
And schools too celebrate the ‘Festival of Lights’ in a pompous way with the intention of telling their wards that the mechanized life style should not take away the spirit out of the most celebrated festival of the country.
When the students of AUPET Chinmaya Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, celebrated Deepavali with the traditional touch, they were in the traditional attire of the land - girls in their most charming half sari and boys in dhoti.
The highlight of the programme was the girls standing in the shape of a feathered peacock with lamps.
“The beauty, elegance, pride, delight, colour and spirituality of peacock reflect our value-based education, tradition and culture shunning all bad qualities. One who follows tradition will never get out of his way and what he learns at school will guide him wherever he goes. Our traditional celebrations do breed unity and sharing among the humans,” said the Principal, G. Pongal Punitha.
The students, along with their correspondent, S. Annamalai, took an oath on the occasion to make every Deepavali a festival that weaves a thread of joy through the cultural diversity of India.
With the crackers illuminating the sky and the children screaming in joy, the Chinmayan Deepavali celebrations came to an end.
