Special squad to check child labour in Sabarimala

PATHANAMTHITA: The Labour Department will deploy a special squad in Sabarimala during the coming Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrim season to ensure strict enforcement of labour laws at various commercial establishments there.

District Labour Officer Latheef Ottathangal told The Hindu here on Tuesday that earnest efforts would be made to check child labour at various shops and other establishments at Pampa and Sabarimala.

Spot fine

He said a spot fine of Rs.25,000 would be imposed on the contractors or licensees of various shops who were found employing children below the age of 14 in their business establishments. The child labourers, if any, at various business establishments at Sabarimala would be handed over to the District Child Labour Welfare Committee chaired by the District Collector and the fine collected would be utilised for their rehabilitation through select orphanages approved by the department.

Licence needed

Mr. Latheef said employing labourers from outside the State, without obtaining licence, at various shops and other business establishments at Sabarimala would not be permitted.

All Devaswom Board contractors at Sabarimala should obtain licences from the District Labour Office under the provisions of the Contract Labour Act.
