HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has asked officials of the Animal Husbandry Department to take up cross-breeding of local sheep with Dorper variety as a pilot project in Anantapur district with Rs. 1.7 crore.
At a review meeting here on Tuesday, Dr. Reddy wanted the officials to take up only 10 per cent of the originally proposed 1.50 lakh sheep. A six-month-old Dorper crossbreed would weigh 25 kg and would cost Rs. 2,000, while other lambs weigh only 10 kg and cost Rs. 1,095. The objective of the programme is to have the local lambs in Anantapur crossed with Dorper, a South African breed sheep imported from Australia.
