Need to face challenges: CII meet

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Creation of Chennai-Tiruchi-Madurai industry corridor; leveraging the potential of Tamil Nadu as the centre for energy equipment manufacture; doubling of railway track between Chennai and Kanyakumari; promoting growth through agricultural revolution, tapping the prospects for development in tourism sector, benefiting from globalisation and ICT, and taking the benefits of growth to rural parts were among the ideas generated at the launch meeting of CII TN Vision 2025 conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for Tiruchi zone.

The meeting here follows the ideas generated by PwC with the CII’s primary framework themes of competitiveness, inclusiveness, innovation and sustainability at Coimbatore and Madurai. The next meeting would be held at Chennai later this week.

While factoring in economically vibrant Tamil Nadu’s GDP of 50 billion US Dollars, high urbanisation, a sound education and historically sound industrial base, the meeting underscored the need for facing the challenges in making the growth more equitable and inclusive; gearing up for meeting the huge infrastructural needs to sustain the growth; and managing environmental and ecological sustainability of growth with least transition difficulties.

During the presentation made by S. Sriram and Banuchandar Nagarajan, Consultants, PwC, and moderated by the Vice-Chairman of CII, Tiruchi Zone, A. Annamalai, participants comprising representatives of industry organisations suggested formation of link routes to main roads, improving facilities at ports, shore-based engineering factories, and developing a progressive thinking on Special Economic Zones.

Ten goals

Ten goals have been identified through multiple interactions with stakeholders and government representatives. The goals: balanced regional and social development; strong core infrastructure; inclusive urbanisation; renewal of agriculture / agribusinesses; enhanced skill and employability; high industrial competitiveness; innovation through higher education; capitalising on southern synergy and TN Diaspora; safe environment and excellent public health; and good governance; would be the primary focus.

Education; health, e-governance, transaction costs, tourism, culture, urbanisation, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, industries, state finances, private sector participation, and sports, media and entertainment have been identified as the fourteen enablers. The exercise has been split into seven phases: initiation, analytic synthesis, ideation, integration, formulation, syndication and envisioning (bringing out the final vision document).

The exercise will identify three thrust areas for industry in which the State should aim to be first or second in the country and three core themes, which would be supported by premier education. The vision document will also outline strategic action points for the government and industry.
