THANJAVUR: Bharathidasan University Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko has underlined the need for performing ‘archanas’ or temple rituals in Tamil.
Mr. Ponnavikko was delivering the convocation address at Tamil University at Thanjavur on Monday after distributing distance education diplomas to students.
He appealed to Tamil University and Tamil Virtual University students to impress upon people for using Tamil. Because of the centuries-old practice there was a mindset among people that their prayers would not reach God if uttered in Tamil. This should be changed and they should be enlightened that Tamil could be used for praying, he said.
He said that Tamil reached countries like South Africa because of Saiva Siddhantham.
There are nearly 56 Saivite temples in South Africa. Those who practised Saivam preached Tamil.
Fine arts diplomas
He also suggested that diplomas in fine arts like Bharatanatyam and music could be given jointly by Bharathidasan University, Tamil University and Cauvery Kalai Kuzhu of Tiruchi.
He distributed certificates to students of dance and music who completed their diploma courses in the distance education mode of the Tamil University.
