Special package for doctors this week

Special Correspondent

P.K. Sreemathy

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet meeting on Wednesday would decide on a special package for doctors, Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy said here on Tuesday.

Replying to questions at a press conference, the Minister said the Finance Department had not objected to formation of a speciality cadre in the Health Department. It had, in fact, agreed to creation of additional posts.

Ms. Sreemathy said the government was always willing for discussions with the agitating doctors. It would soon be implementing their demand for reservation to government doctors in admissions to postgraduate courses. Non-practising allowance would be increased for the administrative cadre.

She said that most of the doctors had received their salaries for October after certifying that they had carried out their assigned work during the month.

She announced that the work on the new super-speciality block at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, under the Prime Minister’s Swasthya Suraksha Yojana would begin on November 24. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan would inaugurate the work at a function to be attended by Union Minister for Health Anbumani Ramdoss.

The Rs. 100-crore project would include construction of the postgraduate block for nursing and a new medical technology block. The work would be completed by May 2009. About Rs. 50 crore would be used for purchase of equipment such as MRI and CT scanning machines, ventilators, ultrasound scanners, catheterisation laboratory and heart-lung machine. A.V. Ramadevi, who is retiring as Principal of the college, would be appointed special officer for the project. Health Secretary Vishwas Mehta said the proposed trauma care unit at the college would start functioning shortly. M. Ayyappan, chairman of Hindustan Latex which is executing the project, and Special Secretary Usha Titus attended the press conference.
