Loyola tops Young World quiz competition

Another team from the school comes second in ‘sudden death’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noel Johns and Ambareesh S.J, of Loyola School, Sreekaryam, emerged winners of the Thiruvananthapuram regional round of the eighth edition of The Hindu-Young World Quiz competition which was held here at the A.K.G. Memorial Hall in the city on Tuesday.

Another team from Loyola School comprising Rahul Krishnan and Arjun Shajan bagged the second spot. The competition for deciding the regional winners saw an intense battle between the six teams selected for the final round. The near one-hour long battle lead to dead-heat with the two teams from Loyola ending up in a tie with 59 points. The winner was finally selected through a ‘sudden death’ by the quizmaster. The duo will now lock horns with the 12 teams from other regions at the national finals to be held in Chennai. The winners walked away with an array of gifts – Rs.8,000 and a bounty of gift hampers from the sponsors. The prize money will be double for the national winners.

Akash Manoj and Aditya Menon of L’ecole Chempaka were the second runners-up with 37 points. The three other finalists were Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodunganoor; Kendriya Vidyalaya, Adoor; and Adarsh Vidya Kendra.

Over 500 participants from 100 schools attended the preliminary round, which began around 2 p.m. A total of 270 teams took part in the event. Each team consisted of two members – all studying in Classes VI to IX. The participants comprised students from Thiruvananthapuram, Kanyakumari, Kollam and Pathanamthitta.

Viswabharathy Public School, Neyyattinkara, which named themselves ‘Hell’s Angles’ won the prize for the best team name, while team from K.V.A.F.S., Akkulam, chose ‘Egg Heads’ and St. Thomas Residential School, Mukkolakkal, ‘Young Quizwallahs.’ The prizes for the best outstation teams went to Adarsh Vidya Kendra, Nagarcoil and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kottarakkara. The quiz competition covered a number of subjects, including religion, literature, sports and science. Quizmaster V.V. Ramanan and Bharat Epur of Quizwallahs enlivened the proceedings.

Amity University was the national title sponsor for the competition. Tara Talcum powder and Lotte Booproo were the associate sponsors. The other sponsors at the national level were GM Pens, Penguin, Encyclopaedia Britannica, State Bank of Travancore, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Vizag Steel Plant, Tourism Malaysia and Extramarks.com. Dabur-Real Mango is the beverage sponsor. The event managers were Quizwalahs.

Nutrifud Cakes and Vijayalaxmi Cashew Co. were the State-level sponsors. The regional sponsors for Thiruvananthapuram are Quilon Radio Service and Babas Colour Lab.
