Counterfeit a grave threat: CBI chief
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: India has called for the immediate attention of the Interpol member-countries to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit currency which poses a grave threat to national security and could result in economic destabilisation.
In his address at the 76th general assembly Interpol at Marrakesh, Morocco on Tuesday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Vijay Shanker said in the past decade India has seen an unprecedented rise of counterfeit currency and the seizure has gone up to Rs. 70-80 million a year.
He said there was evidence of sponsored counterfeiting with sinister objectives of terror-funding and promoting trans-national organised crime.
