Ritwik, Saurav in main draw

Chennai: India’s highest ranked player and ICL academy trainee Saurav Ghosal and Ritwik Bhattacharya did the country proud by making it to the main draw of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Open Super Series Platinum squash event.

Saurav beat Jesse Englebrecht of South Africa 11-5, 11-9, 11-5, while Ritwik overcame Chris Simpson of UK 4-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-4. Saurav now faces World champion David Palmer of Australia while Ritwik plays Adrian Grant of England

It’s the first time that two Indians have entered the main draw of the top 32 player-Series Platinum event. Their success should boost the confidence of the Indian men’s team, which is gearing up for the World men’s team championships to be held at the ICL Academy in Chennai early next month.

In the women’s section India’s hope Joshna Chinappa went down to Sarah Kippax of England 9-3, 9-3, 9-4 in the final round of the qualifying phase.
