Hyderabad: A bundle of talent, an excellent student, a budding painter, a Bal Ratna awardee and an IIT aspirant. All of 15 years old, K. Pravija now aims at bagging Bal Shree contest being organised by National Bal Bhavan to identify creativity and artistic talent among schoolchildren. Daughter of a ‘pranic’ healer couple P.H.K. Prabhakar Murthy and N. Vijaya Lakshmi, the teenager began showing skills in different disciplines from childhood. She started learning Kuchipudi at the age of three years and developing a liking for aesthetics. Her tryst with painting was a result of fascination with colours. Pravija’s frequent visit to art galleries, meeting art students and interaction with professors of several universities has helped her hone her skills. Though studies are her priority, art is some thing that gives her solace. “Students should always be involved in extra curricular activities. It gives them peace of mind,” says the young painter. She had no formal training in art. “You do not learn to paint in tuitions. Most of the artists have keen observation and that is how I have developed my skills,” she adds. Bagging the Bal Ratna award in the creative art category, Pravija is on a roll and her love for art seems to grow by the day. Support from parents helped her focus on different disciplines and bring out her talent since she was a toddler. Besides painting, Pravija has learnt sculpting, clay modelling and designing collages. “Clay modelling is another aspect that I like. For three years, I have been making idols of Ganapathi during Ganesh Chaturthi. It is something that I really enjoy,” says Pravija. In spite of having varied interests in different forms of art, she is still focussed on getting into IIT.
