KTDC to set up convention centre at Hotel Samudra

The centre will accommodate 250 persons

Samudra park handed over to KTDC

Thiruvananthapuram: A modern convention centre is to be set up in the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation’s (KTDC) Hotel Samudra in Kovalam as part of the efforts to promote MICE (Meetings, Incentive Convention Exhibition (MICE) tourism in the beach resort.

The convention centre, to come up in 50 cents of land handed over by TRIDA to the KTDC, will accommodate 250 persons, a top official of the KTDC said. Although the hotel on the G. V. Raja road has one of the biggest beach frontages, the lack of a convention centre has been posing problems in promoting MICE tourism. Samudra, one of the eight premium hotels of the KTDC, does not even have a spacious hall to hold a major conference. “The idea is to commission the convention centre in two years,” the official said.

Renovation plans

The authorities have also decided to renovate some rooms in the hotel. The property, which now has three star classification, has 64 rooms, including two suites. The lobby, restaurant and kitchen in the hotel too are likely to be renovated.

Lack of adequate space in the lobby and restaurant had posed problems to the hotel authorities.

Poor upkeep

Meanwhile, Kerala Tourism has decided to hand over the Samudra Park in front of Hotel Samudra to KTDC. Official sources said the decision was taken as Vizhinjam panchayat was not maintaining the park properly.

The park was constructed at a cost of Rs. 60 lakhs by Kerala Tourism and has a helipad. The order handing over the park to KTDC has already been issued, sources said.
