VISAKHAPATNAM: Deepavali is the time when people, cutting across religious barriers, play with fireworks. The joyous occasion will become memorable when one exercises caution in handling fireworks.
District Fire Officer P.V. Ramana has listed safety measures to be adopted during the festival. One should always wear tight cotton clothes while lighting firecrackers. Children should light crackers only in presence and under the watchful eyes of elders. Fireworks should be lighted outside the house, preferably in open yards. Half burnt firecrackers should be put out with water or dry sand.
Fireworks like rockets and crackers should be lighted away from huts, haystacks and petrol bunks. While igniting fireworks, one should turn his/her head away and be in a standing position to avoid inhalation of toxic gases. When clothes catch fire accidentally, gently fall on the ground and roll yourself. Firecrackers should be kept away from matchboxes, open lights and gas lighters. Sufficient water should be kept ready near the place where one lights fireworks.
