KOCHI: Security has been tightened at the Cochin International Airport following a direction from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to maintain alert at all airports and aviation installations across the country in view of the imposition of emergency in Pakistan. A security meeting held at the airport in the backdrop of the BCAS direction discussed the steps to be taken to enhance security measures in and around the airport, sources said. A close watch is kept over the flight and passenger movement to and from Sri Lanka considering the escalation of violence in the island nation. Frisking of passengers has been made more stringent and their baggage is being thoroughly scanned. Secondary ladder point frisking has been introduced. Cargo screening has been tightened. Catering items to be served aboard the aircraft are also subjected to thorough checks. Strict surveillance has been maintained along the approach path of aircraft while a close eye has been kept over the staff entering aircraft. Access to aircraft and operational areas has also been regulated. Surveillance of both passengers and visitors has been intensified. However, no ban has been imposed on visitors’ entry to the airport.
