KANCHEEPURAM: The Kancheepuram district police will launch an intensive drive against drunk driving, according to Superintendent of Police K. Periaiah.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, the SP said the police would borrow 50 breath analysers from the Greater Chennai City Police to carry out breath testing on drivers for three days from November 6. Stringent action such as cancellation of driving licences would be initiated against those driving in an inebriated condition.
So far the district police have forwarded 892 recommendations for cancellation of licences of the drivers who were found drunk while driving or for violation of road safety norms.
A total of 335 licences have been cancelled by the Regional Transport Authorities, he added.
Accident rate reduced
Mr. Periaiah said a careful study of accidents, which took place in the Kancheepuram police district domain in September this year, helped the police reduce the accident rate in the subsequent months.
A detailed study of accident spots, timing of accident and the vehicles involved led to identification of certain spots along the National and State Highways and other roads. Subsequently, vehicle checks were taken up at the newly identified places, which had led to the reduction in the rate of accidents.
Classification
As for clamping down on anti-social elements, the offenders were classified into three categories — law-and-order problem creators, prohibition offenders and theft/robbery offenders — and were being rounded up, the SP said.
A total of 29 habitual criminals were booked under the Goondas Act and another 44 under Bootleggers Act during the last nine months, Mr.Periaiah added.
