THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government on Tuesday passed orders renaming the ‘school parliament’ as ‘school Janadhipathya Vedi’ and extended the concept to higher secondary and vocational higher secondary classes. Fifty per cent of all posts in the forum will be reserved for girl students. The principal and headmaster will be the patrons of the Vedi. A teacher unanimously suggested by all teachers will be the co-patron and the returning officer for elections to the forum. Each classes will be a electing unit and will elect a class leader. All the class leaders will, together, constitute the ‘Vedi.’ The GO 194/2007 General Education mandates that the ‘Vedi’ shall meet once every month and that each session should begin with a ‘question hour.’ All activities of the school shall be subject to discussion in the forum. Office-bearers of the ‘Vedi’ should be given due representation in committees and on stage during events such as youth festivals, sports meets, science fairs and school day celebrations. The formation of the Vedi shall be in keeping with the 10 directives contained in the G.O. 309/03/general education brought out on the basis of the direction of the division bench of the High Court.
