T.R.Baalu NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu has approved Rs.635.10 lakh for road improvement works on National Highway 208 in Tamil Nadu. The Highway connects Kollam in Kerala and Thirumangalam in Tamil Nadu. It also links important towns like Shencottah, Tenkasi, Rajapalayam with important tourist centres like Sabarimala, Courtallam and Madurai. A sum of Rs.278.58 lakh has been approved for construction of a high level bridge at km.123/4 at Sengilipatti Village (Periya Odai) in Tirunelveli district. The existing bridge is narrow and dilapidated. Also, Rs.184.29 lakh will go towards constructing retaining walls at km.113/6 -114/0, and km.127/4 & 133/8-134/2 in the Kadayanallur municipal limit in Tirunelveli district. These stretches run along huge tanks and the shoulder stretches have been eroded. Around Rs.129.51 lakh has been set aside for improving stretches of the National Highway in the Kadayanallur municipal limit in Tirunelveli district. Similarly, Rs.21.60 lakh would be spent for the construction of a retaining wall at km.207/4 along the approaches of the minor bridge at M.Suppulapuram in Madurai district. In addition, Rs.16.43 lakh has been approved for constructing another retaining wall at km.206/4 along the road side tank at M. Supplapuram. Mr. Baalu also approved Rs.4.69 lakh for consultancy services for a feasibility study and preparation of the detailed project report for the construction of a bypass to Seithur at km.155/4-158/2 in Virudhunagar district.
