Rs. 61.96 lakh sanctioned as compensation for Vachathi victims

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government has so far sanctioned Rs. 61.96 lakh, including Rs. 34.4 lakh allotted on November 3, to be paid as compensation to the victims of Vachathi violence.

According to R. Vaigai, counsel for the Tamil Nadu Tribals’ Association which had filed the petition, the Collector of Dharmapuri district had recommended a total of Rs. 1.14 crore as compensation. The November 3 Government Order said over Rs. 34 lakh would be paid as “immediate relief.”

As for the number of claimants, she said the association had disputed the verification done by the State Government in eliminating certain victims from the list of 475. Government informed the court that only 349 were found eligible to claim compensation.
