VELLORE: Breast cancer can be detected early and cured, provided women in the age group of 22 to 30 years develop the practice of self-examination, Deputy Director of Health Services (DDHS), Vellore, S. Rajasekharan said on Tuesday.
He was inaugurating a seminar on ‘Cancer diagnosis and cure,’ organised by the Field Publicity Office, Vellore, office of the DDHS, Vellore, and the National Service Scheme of Auxilium College on the college premises here.
Breast cancer is common among women in the age group of 22 to 30 years who have not had children, Mr. Rajasekharan said.
Cervical cancer is common among women who have had many children. This is because of wounds caused in the cervix owing to frequent delivery.
Raja Sivanandam, Deputy Director of Medical Services (TB), said that college girls should spread the message on cancer awareness in rural areas. People there could visit primary health centres or health sub-centres for testing.
Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav said early diagnosis was the key to preventing cancer. It could be prevented by avoiding pan masala and tobacco. Another problem with regard to treatment was that procedures such as chemotherapy were costly. Chemotherapy cost anywhere between Rs.4,000 and Rs.1.45 lakh. Therefore, it was always better to exercise caution and take preventive measures.
P. Selvamani of the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Christian Medical College Hospital said when women were educated, the entire family benefited.
