Rahman case: CBI refuses to reveal details

Prasun Mukherjee

Kolkata: Former Commissioner of the Kolkata police Prasun Mukherjee, who was removed from his post following questions raised over the role of the police in the events pertaining to the death of Rizwanur Rahman, was questioned here on Tuesday by senior officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the case.

The central agency is investigating the death of Rahman whose body was found by the side of the railway track near here on September 21. The CBI had been directed to do so by the Calcutta High Court and submit its report within two months.

Two days after Rahman’s death, Mr. Mukherjeee had, at a news conference, stated that it appeared to be a case of suicide and had also defended the role of two senior officials of the police in the events leading to the death.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had announced the transfer of Mr. Mukherjee and four others including two IPS officials. The CBI officials went to the office of Mr Mukherjee, who is now the Additional Director General, Telecom, in the morning and questioned him for nearly 45 minutes. Later a CBI official said nothing regarding the interrogation could be divulged for the sake of the investigations.

Mr. Mukherjee was the last of the police officials removed from their posts in connexion with the Rahman case to be questioned by the CBI team.

CBI officials have also questioned members of the families of Rahman and those Priyanka.

They included influential city businessman and Rahman’s father-in-law, Ashok Todi, who was opposed to the marriage and is one among those against whom the CBI has registered a case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code as well as under Sections 506 and 120[B] on the basis of a FIR filed by members of the Rahman’s family.
