Bangalore: India’s progress in leprosy eradication efforts has been significant and the participatory work by governmental and voluntary agencies in this field is laudable, Prema Leela, Director of Health and Family Welfare, said here on Monday. Speaking at the Indian Development Foundation’s (IDF) 23rd Foundation Day function, Ms. Leela said the dream of the Father of the Nation, of eliminating leprosy from the country, was coming true. She gave away IDF grants to leprosy/tuberculosis projects in Karnataka. IDF had earmarked grants of Rs. 46 lakh to 83 health and development projects throughout India during the year. In Karnataka, grants were given to Sumanahalli Leprosy project, Bangalore; St. Joseph’s Leprosy Hospital, Mangalore; Hind Kusht Nivaran Sangh, Mangalore; Hubli hospital for the Handicapped, Hubli and Karuna Trust, B.R. Hills. She presented awards to 25 schools in Karnataka which had made exemplary efforts to raise awareness about leprosy/TB. H. Sudarshan, Honorary Secretary, Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra, asked the youth to live a life of service and usefulness to society.
