HYDERABAD: Twenty students of optometry from Singapore Polytechnic went through a week-long attachment at the LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) that included hands-on training with highly-sophisticated equipment. A press release said the overseas attachment was the first for Singapore Polytechnic students and that their learning experience included encounters with unfamiliar eye diseases and first-hand experience on watching acrylic eyes manufacture. The exposure to a completely different culture and educational system also included community service and the foreign students spent a week in villages, participating in vision screening to 900 villagers, apart from distributing 400 pairs of recycled spectacles. Lim Hui Ying, a third year Optometry student said it was an eventful attachment for her. “This was an eye-opener. We gained new knowledge and got to witness many rare cases,” she said.
