Grand finale: Athletes walking past the podium to mark the closing of the women’s sports festival in Berhampur on Wednesday. BERHAMPUR: Cuttack district emerged a champion in the State level Women’s Sports Festival 2007 that concluded at the Berhampur stadium on Wednesday. More than 900 participants from 28 districts of Orissa had participated in this three day sports festival. Ritarani Gundua of Cuttack district was adjudged the best athlete of the meet. The concluding session of the sports festival was colourful as it included a mixed parade of athletes which followed a session of dance and fun. State Energy Minister Surya Narayan Patro attended the concluding session of the sports meet as the chief guest. Cuttack beat Sundergarh to win the kabaddi title. Jagatsinghpur was the champion for kho kho while the team from Cuttack bagged the gold medal for basketball. In handball and volleyball the winners were Keonjhar and Khurda respectively. AchieversAthletes of Cuttack district excelled in the athletics events. Ritarani Gundua won the 100 meters race with a timing of 12.73 seconds to become the fastest woman of the tournament. She won the 200 meter dash with a timing of 26.68 seconds and also played a major role in making her team win the 4x100 relay race. Parvati Sethi of Cuttack won gold medals in shot put and discuss throw. Purnima Darg of Sundargarh district won the high jump title with a jump of 1.45 meters. Reena Baa of Khurda district was the winner of long jump event. With a throw of 34.20 meters Pramila Kangari of Sundargarh district won the gold medal in javeline throw. In the long distance runs also the athletes from Cuttack excelled. Asmita Kujur of Cuttack won the 3,000 meters and 1500 meters run. Her compatriot Saraswati Chand managed to win the 800 meter race. But the athlete of Khurda, Namita Kabat managed to win the 400 meter run. State team selected during the meet would attend the national women’s sport meet to be held in Chennai after a few weeks.
