Magician Gopinath Muthukad performed for the Chinese on the Indo-China border at Nathu La Pass, 50 km away from Gangtok in Sikkim. The veteran magician and his team endured low temperature and low atmospheric pressure at 14,400 feet altitude to carry out the performance based on the theme of Indo-China friendship. Chinese soldiers stood on their side of the barbed wire border fence and viewed Muthukad’s performance with great interest. The magician and his team, arrayed in Indian Army fatigues, sang patriotic songs and carried out a range of tricks. The Indian Army organised the show. Major Sanjiv Rai, Commanding Officer of the Nathu La Company 5 Granadiers Unit, received the team. Nathu La Pass is a prominent point on the ancient Silk route. It was closed for nearly four decades. The pass was opened last year following an agreement between India and China. The Ministry of Defence, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Life Insurance Corporation of India and Union Bank of India sponsored Muthukad’s tour. It will conclude in Kanyakumari on November 30. G. Anand
