Lawyers boycott courts in Eluru

In protest mode: Lawyers staging a protest at Eluru on Wednesday.

ELURU: Lawyers abstained from courts in the city on Wednesday as a token of protest against the alleged intimidation by the police. Later, they staged a protest at the district courts under the banner of the Eluru Bar Association. According to information, advocate P.V. Krishna Reddy at Jangareddygudem was reportedly implicated in a cheating case following a complaint by a woman who was allegedly deceived by a person with a false promise of marrying her. The victim reportedly complained to the police that the local elders, including the lawyer, had promised to ensure compensation from the person who cheated her but failed to keep their word.

In Bhimavaram, the police reportedly summoned another lawyer D.K.V. Prakash, ex-councilor of Bhimavaram Municipal Council and Congress leader, to police station for questioning for his alleged role in a case of circulation of fake currency notes.

According to Superintendent of Police B. Balakrishna, the police questioned the lawyer following a confession statement by a woman, accused in a case of fake currency circulation. Even as the police claim that they were pursuing the cases as per law irrespective of the status of persons involved, the Eluru Bar Association accused the police of implicating its members in ‘false’ cases.
