Illegal gun manufacturing unit raided; one held

Correspondent

Revolvers, pistol and material recovered

CUTTACK: As was suspected, the Cuttack police on Wednesday traced an illegal gun-manufacturing unit flourishing in a remote part of the district following the arrest of a person in the city. The district police raided the unit in Paika Barabati village under the Kanpur police station, about 45 km from here, following the arrest of one Ramesh Padhy by the city police on Tuesday night.

The police seized two revolvers and a single-shot country-made pistol from his possession while huge amount of gun-making material were recovered from his unit.

“Padhy was on his way to deliver guns to his clients when the Malgodown police after a tip-off, arrested him from Rehman Square near Jobra barrage,” said district superintendent of police S.K. Priyadarshi.

Interrogation

On subsequent interrogation by the city police, it was revealed that Padhy was not a gunrunner but was gun manufacturer instead, Priyadarshi said.

Raiding his unit, police retrieved six metal pipes, three half-made pistols and other materials required for gun making from his single-room unit.

The police believe that the unit was set up recently but investigations were on to find out his connections and clients.

The source of illegal firearms was traced during the Cuttack police’s crackdown on anti-socials. The police earlier this week executed nearly 100 pending NBWs and drew up an action plan to be offensive against the anti-social elements that pose a challenge to the force over these days.

The city over the past few weeks witnessed an upsurge in crime rate. The police are also systematically working on tracing the source of illegal firearms and ammunitions, as there was heavy inflow of illegal arms into the city during the recent past. The city police already seized at least 61 illegal arms during the first half of the year.

After tracing an arms manufacture unit inside the district, the situation certainly demands police to be more alert and vigilant.
