Special Correspondent

Proposed to plant two lakh seedlings in the district

Udhagamandalam: Elaborate arrangements were being made for implementing the state- level ‘Tree Cultivation In Private Lands’ programme here, according to the District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North Division, M. Mohammed Iqbal Basha.

Speaking to newspersons here on Tuesday, he said that Tamil Nadu was the first in the country to implement such a scheme.

Pointing out that during the current fiscal it was proposed to plant two lakh seedlings in the district, he said the species would be mainly Silver Oak.

Every year the quantity of seedlings distributed under the scheme by the department would double.

The distribution would be done at the rate of 160 seedlings per acre a farmer.

The cost of each seedling would be Rs.11.45. Initially, seedlings would be given only to small and marginal farmers.

If the plants were nurtured well a subsidy of Rs. 1,000 per acre would be given during March 2008. Stating that efforts were being made to plant the seedlings before the end of the current wet season, the District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris South Division, D. Arun, said that for further details the people could contact phone numbers 2443968, 2444083 or 261302 (Gudalur).
