SPANKING NEW: The minor irrigation tank after its renovation under Indiramma Cheruvu scheme in Madaka village of Odela mandal in Karimnagar district.

MADAKA (KARIMNAGAR DT.): The ambitious Indiramma cheruvu scheme introduced by the State Government, has inspired the villagers of this interior Madaka village in Odela mandal. Cutting across party lines they have installed a statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at their renovated and remodelled minor irrigation tank in the village.

Development

Even as the politicians of various parties were quarrelling on the floor of the Assembly over various issues, these villagers have kept aside their parties and strived for the development of the village. “We do not want any kind politics and obstruct the development of the village. Our village was neglected since ages because of non-availability of irrigation sources following the breaching and siltation of ancient tank. Thanks to the Indiramma cheruvu scheme, we could repair the tank and store sufficient water and recharge the ground water table considerably and doing cultivation happily,” said the villagers.

With the initiatives taken by sarpanch M. Komuraiah Goud and MPTC member N. Ravinder Reddy, the villagers have started the repairs of defunct minor irrigation tank in the month of March this year. Within four months, about 450 labourers worked and constructed 640 meters length strong bund with a width of three meters. The total cost incurred in the project was Rs. 35.40 lakh . A total of 26,500 mandays were generated during the period.

Now, the tank is providing irrigation sources to about 190 acres when compared to 25 to 30 acres earlier. In order to avoid soil erosion of the bund, the villagers had grown creepers such as cucumber, bitter gourd and other vegetables.
